Jury Duty Update: RELEASED! I went in this morning as part of the 80 potential jurors, but was excused from further obligation. The civil suit concerns mesothelioma and asbestos, and when we jurors were presenting our possible conflicts, I said that my father was just put into hospice for COPD, and has been on oxygen for over a decade, and if there was someone involved in this case dealing with similar lung issues, I would probably find it difficult to be unemotional. So I have completed my jury obligation for the next two years (assuming I stay in Multnomah County).
And not to bury the lede, but my father is now in hospice. He's still in the same home with the same people, but now the issues that recently took him to the ER will be referred to an on-call hospice nurse, who will determine what should be done. The ER trips were hard on him; he'd be there for a few hours, and they'd either just give him more oxygen or note that he'd coughed up some blood, and then send him home (due to his condition, symptoms that would be greatly concerning in a younger, healthier person are not atypical, nor so worrisome). I feel like I've been emotionally preparing for a final downturn for a long time. He's 92, and we've been having weekly family Zoom calls for the past few years, so I feel like we've been closer and in more contact since the pandemic than in the prior thirty years. He was in good spirits yesterday, and very much himself, so we'll see. I could be writing a very similar post a year from now saying that he's made it to 93. Or not. Time will tell.
